Morning Reflections at Lake Kittamaqundi
Columbia, Maryland
Some mornings invite you to slow down and simply take in the calmness around you. Lake Kittamaqundi, located in the heart of Columbia, Maryland, across from the Columbia Mall, is one of those places that feels calm before the rest of the day begins.
I often find myself walking around the lake early in the morning, just as the sun begins to rise above the horizon. The light gently touches the surface of the water, creating reflections that shift and change with every moment. Birds glide across the lake, and the soft sounds of the morning create a peaceful rhythm that makes it easy to forget just how busy the day can eventually become.
Places like this remind me why I love photography. Itās not always about dramatic landscapes or distant destinations. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs come from the locations closest to homeāplaces where the light, the water, and your place of peace all come together naturally.
Lake Kittamaqundi has become one of my favorite places to walk with a camera. Every visit feels slightly different. The sunlight changes, the birds fly across the sky, and the reflections of the lake tell a new story each time.
Behind the Photograph
Location: Lake Kittamaqundi, Columbia, Maryland
Time of Day: Early Morning
Camera: Sony A7R V
Lens: 35mm
Conditions: Soft sunrise light with calm water reflections
Early morning is the best time to photograph this lake. The light is soft and directional, and the water is usually calm enough to create beautiful reflections. The quiet atmosphere also allows you to notice small detailsābirds crossing the lake, ripples in the water, and subtle color changes as the sun rises higher in the sky.
Moments like these often disappear quickly, which makes photography feel like a way of preserving them.
What Stayed With Me
What I appreciate most about Lake Kittamaqundi is its simplicity. Itās a place where people come to walk, reflect, and begin their day. Standing along the water with a camera in hand, itās easy to realize that photography doesnāt always require traveling far from home.
Sometimes the most meaningful photographs are waiting just a few minutes away.
This lake continues to remind me that beautiful moments can appear anywhereāif youāre willing to slow down long enough to see them.
